Mobile Data Communications Gatway, on scene.

Imass Mobile Data Communications Gateway (MDCG)

The MDCG is an integrating business system which can facilitate and manage bi-directional data communications with mobile resources via a range of Mobile Data Communications Bearers, including:

  • Tetra (O2 Airwave within the UK)

  • Tetrapol

  • GPRS

  • Transcomm RAM

The MDCG was specifically conceived as a mechanism for routing messages between a Command and Control system and mobile resources (eg. fire appliances).  It is intended to be an ‘intelligent gateway’, i.e. it maintains its own data set and is capable of acting upon the content of messages, rather than simply acting as a basic routing mechanism.

The scope of the MDCG is bounded by information flows between:

  • The C&C system and the MDCG;

  • The MDCG and the Mobile Data Communications system;

  • The MDCG and an optional visual real time GIS facility (this is provided primarily by Imass for Brigades who do not have a GIS integrated with the C&C or to provide additional GIS facilities in other parts of the Brigade - not shown in this case); and

  • The MDCG User Interface and the User (for system administrative use).

Communication between the C&C system and the MDCG is by means of the GD92 protocol, a standard communications protocol used by Fire and Rescue Services.

GD92 supports a wide range of messages, of which only a sub-set are required by the MDCG (many GD92 messages are simply not applicable to the environment).

The GD92 based MDCG enables efficient bi-directional mobile data communications (including mobilising messages, status/location updates, text messages and acknowledgements) between the C&C and software applications on the MDTs via the radio network.

Whilst the MDCG may be capable of, and may have a role in, controlling the rate of location updates from mobile resources in response to status updates or network conditions, where the mobile resource is not equipped with an MDT an intelligent GPS unit will be required capable of being instructed over air, by the MDCG, to change the subscribed network polling rate of the radio.
