Imass
Upgrade GNIS for Northern Ireland Electricity.
Imass has been awarded a contract to upgrade the Northern Ireland Electricity (NIE) Geographic Network Information System (GNIS). GNIS is responsible for managing geographically accurate records of assets for NIE’s distribution and transmission networks.
Northern Ireland Electricity, like many utility companies, is facing increasing demands for more accurate records, in this case as a result of recent amendments to streetworks legislation. The upgraded system will help NIE meet these and future requirements whilst also improving system performance.
The contract includes upgrade of the GNIS Intranet solution that provides widespread access to network records to operational staff throughout NIE. For the first time users will be able to seamlessly toggle between control room diagram and geographic views of the network on the same system.
‘Imass had already helped us to stabilise our existing system’ said Sinead McAnaney, NIE’s project manager. ‘We were impressed with their knowledge and understanding of GIS and electricity network records, and they were proactive in suggesting a way forward for GNIS’’
The upgraded system will be based upon GE Energy’s Smallworld platform, the world’s leading GIS platform for electricity utilities, with intranet access being provided using the Smallworld Internet Application Server.
The work is part of a longer term development strategy devised by NIE with the help of Imass’ consultants to integrate all network records on a single platform.
